Manchester United have secured the majority of the land needed to build their proposed new 100,000-capacity stadium.United announced on Monday that they had acquired a 25-acre (10 hectare) site close to their current Old Trafford home.The land purchase is a major step forward in United's plans to build Britain's biggest sporting arena.The triangular-shaped plot 350 metres to the north west of Old Trafford means adjacent land owned by Freightliner will not be required.The location of the nearby freight terminal had previously been a complicating factor.Collette Roche, chief executive of the new stadium development, said: "Today's news highlights the progress we're making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development."Being able to build so close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the heritage, traditions and rituals that are so important to our fans."Securing the right land for our new home has been absolutely critical and the land we've acquired gives us the stage to deliver a truly world-class stadium that honours our past and is ready for our future."United first unveiled plans for their ambitious £2 billion ($2.6 billion) stadium in 2025.The venue will be the centre-piece of a wider 370-acre regeneration project featuring 15,000 new homes and creating 48,000 new jobs locally and 90,000 nationally.A master-plan for the Old Trafford regeneration is scheduled to be unveiled on July 9.United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said it was a "no-brainer" to rebuild Old Trafford after buying a stake in the club in 2024.United have played at Old Trafford for 115 years but the 74,000-capacity stadium has fallen into disrepair in recent years.   Related Story

(AFP) Giovanni Malago, who headed the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, became the man charged with revitalising Italian football on Monday after being elected head of the country's football federation (FIGC).The 67-year-old saw off, as widely expected, his only challenger for the position, former football chief Giancarlo Abete, taking 68.58 percent of the votes during an extraordinary general meeting held at the FIGC's headquarters in Rome.His election was little more than a formality as he had already secured the backing of Italy's top two professional divisions, Serie A and Serie B, and the player and coaching associations, who together commanded over half of the available votes.He promised "change" and "answers to structural problems" after campaigning on a platform of youth development reform and help for clubs investing in infrastructure.Malago is an experienced sports administrator and canny political operator who presided over the birth of a golden age for Italian sport as head of the national Olympic Committee (CONI), the country's highest sporting body, between 2013 and 2025.He takes control of the FIGC with the national sport at its lowest ebb, lagging further and further behind its traditional European rivals since Italy last won the World Cup 20 years ago.Serie A was once the world's richest and prestigious league but even its biggest teams -- AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus -- can no longer compete with the financial might of England's Premier League and a handful of other mega clubs on the continent.WORLD CUP FAILURELast season Atalanta were the only Italian team got to the last 16 of the Champions League where they were demolished 10-2 on aggregate by Bayern Munich.And Italian football was sent into a tailspin in March after the men's national team failed for a third consecutive time to qualify for the World Cup which is currently being played in the United States, Canada and Mexico.Malago's predecessor Gabriele Gravina ended up stepping down as FIGC chief after initially trying to stay in charge, while coach Gennaro Gattuso and team general manager Gianluigi Buffon also resigned following elimination in the qualification play-offs by Bosnia-Herzegovina.That penalty shootout defeat will be all the more galling to Italian fans who watched the Bosnians being hammered 4-1 by Switzerland on Thursday.Malago will not only have to appoint a new national team coach, and although Euro 2020 winner Roberto Mancini is widely reported to return, he insisted that he had "not decided anything yet, nor spoken to anyone". LONG-STANDING DESIRE FOR REFORMHe also has to satisfy a long-standing desire for reform within the FIGC and head Italy's part of Euro 2032, which is being co-hosted with Turkey.In April UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin told the Gazzetta Dello Sport that Italy could lose the tournament due to the condition of the country's football stadiums, which he called "some of the worst in Europe".One of the key tasks facing Malago is a reform of youth development in a country which was once a conveyor belt of football talent but whose highest profile current player is Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.Not long before the Bosnia disaster and the subsequent rash of resignations, the FIGC announced a new youth football project in which two heroes of the 2006 World Cup win, Simone Perrotta and Gianluca Zambrotta, are playing a key role.And while the senior national team has often been a source of national embarrassment, Italy's under-17s were crowned European champions for the second time in three years earlier this month.

New York state has formed an exploratory committee looking into the potential for Lake ‌Placid and New York City to ​co-host the Winter ‌Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2042, ‌the governor's ⁠office ‌said on Monday.New York ‌Governor Kathy Hochul pointed to the 2026 Milano ⁠Cortina Games as a model for a dual-city Olympics in her announcement. Lake Placid hosted the Games in 1932 and 1980."The time is now to return the Olympic flame back to New York," Hochul said ​in a statement."It’s clear we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build on Lake Placid's Olympic legacy, ‌New York City's global ⁠platform and ​the strengths that make our State ​unique."The exploratory committee will begin a year-long assessment of a potential bid that would add yet another global sports mega-event to the United States' busy calendar.The U.S. is co-hosting the ongoing World Cup with Mexico and Canada, with New York New Jersey stadium hosting eight matches including ‌the final, while ‌Los Angeles is preparing ⁠to host the 2028 Summer Olympics. A ⁠combined bid ⁠for the 2031 Women's World Cup would see the United States co-host the tournament with Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica, while the Winter Olympics return to Salt Lake City, Utah, in ​2034."I’ve assembled some of the best and the brightest in sports, government and community leadership to take the steps necessary to ensure New York is in the best possible position to make the dream of a Lake Placid-New York City Olympic and Paralympic Winter ‌Games a ​reality," said Hochul.   Related Story
