Asian Beach Games open with grand ceremony in Sanya

The opening ceremony, held at the Arena Theatre in Yasha Park in Sanya, featured spectacular performances. The vibrant artistic showcase highlighted Asian and Chinese identity  The 6th Asian Beach Games - Sanya 2026 officially opened yesterday in a festive atmosphere reflecting the cultural diversity of Asia. The opening ceremony, held at the Arena Theatre in Yasha Park, featured a spectacular performance entitled ‘A Date with the Sea and Sky.’ The vibrant artistic showcase highlighted Asian and Chinese identity while promoting the tourist attractions and tropical nature of Hainan Island, as well as the unique coastal character of Sanya. Following the cultural performance, six athletes, including retired table tennis star Ding Ning, lit the torch to officially open the Games. The Qatari delegation made a notable appearance in the parade of nations, with aquathlon athlete Shaheen al-Kaabi and women’s beach volleyball player Haya Abu-Issa carrying the Qatari flag.  Aquathlon athlete Shaheen al-Kaabi and women's beach volleyball player Haya Abu-Issa carried Qatar's flag at Opening Ceremony.  Beach Handball Team Continues Title DefenceMeanwhile, Qatar’s beach handball team continues its campaign today with two matches against Bangladesh and Mongolia in the first round, after winning two matches against Pakistan and Oman on Tuesday. Qatar will face Jordan tomorrow, followed by Thailand on Sunday, before concluding the group stage against the Maldives on Monday, aiming to secure top position and maintain momentum towards the knockout rounds. Meanwhile, Qatar’s men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams begin their campaigns today. The men’s first team, comprising Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, play their opening match against the Maldives, then face Uzbekistan tomorrow, before concluding group stage matches against Iran on Saturday. Meanwhile, the men’s second team, consisting of Mohamed Ehab and Moussa al-Khair, face Saudi Arabia today, followed by matches against Macau and China. In the women’s competition, Qatar is represented by two teams. The first team, comprising Haya Abu Issa and Laila Mohammed, begins its campaign tomorrow against Sri Lanka before facing China on Saturday in Group A. The second team, consisting of Malak Hashem and Nelly Shalaby, face teams from Japan and South Korea in Group B. Qatar’s sailing team begins its participation, with Tamim Shams competing in the Optimist class for boys, while Thani Shams will participate in the ILCA 4 class. Shaheen al-Kaabi will also compete in the aquathlon competition today. Jiu-jitsu team member Ahmed Al-Qardaghi is scheduled to begin his competition tomorrow in the men’s 77kg weight class.

British lawmakers approve smoking ban for under-18s

Children in Britain ‌who are 17 or younger, and anyone born in ‌the future, will never ‌be able to legally buy ‌cigarettes after lawmakers approved new stricter restrictions on smoking. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill raises the legal age for buying tobacco by one year, every year, starting with people born on or after January 1, 2009, meaning affected age groups face a lifetime ban. The law, which is due to receive royal assent next week, also tightens controls on vaping, including banning sales ​of vaping and nicotine products to under-18s and restricting advertising, displays, free distribution and discounting. The government says the measures will help reduce smoking and prevent ‌young people from becoming addicted to ​nicotine, easing long-term pressure on the National Health Service.Health ​Secretary Wes Streeting said the approval of the bill was a historic moment for the nation’s health. “Children in the UK will be part of the first smoke-free generation, protected from a lifetime of addiction and harm,” he said. “Prevention is better than cure — this reform will save lives, ease pressure on the NHS, and build a healthier Britain.” Smoking causes about 64,000 deaths and 400,000 hospital admissions a year in ‌England, according to official ‌estimates, and costs the NHS around 3bn pounds ($4bn) annually, with wider economic costs exceeding 20bn pounds. Vaping has also become a focus for policymakers, especially over concerns about youth uptake and nicotine addiction.The government banned the sale of single-use or disposable vapes last year over concerns about youth use and environmental damage. The new legislation will tighten those ​rules, with ministers gaining powers to regulate the flavours and packaging of tobacco, vaping and nicotine products through secondary legislation. Around 10% of adults in Great Britain — an estimated 5.5mn people — use vapes, according to health charity Action on Smoking and Health, with levels broadly unchanged since 2024, suggesting growth has begun to plateau. About half of people who vape are former smokers, while around 40% ‌continue to smoke ​alongside vaping, the charity said.

HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), attended the opening ceremony of the Asian Beach Games – Sanya 2026, which was held at Yasha Park, in a vibrant celebratory atmosphere reflecting the rich cultural diversity of Asia. The opening ceremony was attended by a number of senior official and sporting figures, led by Shen Yiqin, State Councilor of China, Thomas Bach, Honorary President for Life of the International Olympic Committee and Husain al-Musallam, Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia, along with members of the Executive Board and a number of Vice Presidents. In attendance also were Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman al-Kuwari, Second Vice President of the QOC, Jassim bin Rashid al-Buenain, Secretary General of the QOC and Abdullah bin Nasser al-Hajri, Consul of Qatar in Guangzhou. This edition marks the first Asian sporting event to be held under the leadership of Sheikh Joaan at the OCA, signaling the beginning of a new phase for sport across the continent — one that focuses on empowering youth and strengthening the role of sport as a platform for cooperation and connection among Asian nations. The Asian Beach Games form part of the OCA’s multi-sport events calendar for 2026. They will be followed by the Asian Games in Aichi–Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, as well as the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from December 13 to 21. The Asian Beach Games will continue until April 30, featuring the participation of 1,790 male and female athletes representing 45 Asian countries, with expectations for a distinguished edition both in terms of organisation and technical standards.

President of the Olympic Council of Asia HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani met with State Councilor of China Shen Yiqin, in the presence of Chinese Olympic Committee President and Minister of Sport Gao Qidan to enhance cooperation between the two sides. The meeting focused on strengthening strategic partnerships to support the Asian Olympic Movement, boost its international presence, and expand collaboration in hosting major sporting events across Asia. The OCA president expressed appreciation for China’s efforts in hosting the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, praising the high level of organisation and readiness, reflecting the country’s growing global sporting stature. Discussions also highlighted China’s increasing focus on sport and its ambition to host events at all levels, reinforcing its role as a key partner in advancing the Asian Olympic Movement. The meeting was attended by First Vice President of the OCA Timothy Fok Tsun-ting; Vice President of the OCA, Otabek Umarov; Vice President of the OCA, Norza Zakaria; Director General of the OCA, Husain Al-Musallam; and Head of the Office of the OCA President and Director of International Relations, Sheikh Faisal bin Ahmed al-Thani. This meeting comes as part of the OCA’s efforts to strengthen relations with member countries and support initiatives that advance Asian sport and promote unity across nations.

Al Rayyan will look to crown their impressive campaign with silverware when they take on Saudi Arabia’s Al Shabab in the final of the Gulf Club Champions League Thursday at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium at 6:45pm. The Qatari side booked their place in the final with a convincing 2-0 victory over Kuwait’s Al Qadsia in the semi-final, while Al Shabab advanced after edging Iraq’s Zakho FC on penalties in the other last-four clash. Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno acknowledged the challenge awaiting his side but expressed confidence in the team’s readiness for the decisive encounter. “The team’s preparations for the final were good, and the focus is currently on delivering the expected level in order to win and be crowned with the Gulf title,” Moreno said. “The final match will be different and requires the highest level of concentration. We must be cautious against a strong and distinguished team that includes high-level players.” Moreno added that playing at home could provide an added boost for his side. Al Rayyan enters the final with high morale, especially since the match is being held at the club’s stadium,” he said. Midfielder Julien De Sart echoed his coach’s optimism, stressing the team’s determination to deliver in front of their supporters. “The team is ready to face Al Shabab and deliver a performance that will help us win the championship title,” De Sart said. “The final match will be difficult for both teams as each side seeks victory. We invite Al Rayyan fans, as their support will motivate the players to perform at their best level.” On the other side, Al Shabab coach Noureddine Zekri expressed confidence in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion and end their long wait for silverware. “I am confident in the team’s ability to deliver a great performance in the final and win the Gulf title,” Zekri said. “Al Shabab has a great history and a historic opportunity to return to the podium after 12 years. Al Rayyan has shown outstanding levels in the tournament and will be playing at home in front of their fans.” Striker Abderrazak Hamdallah said he is fully prepared for the challenge and eager to help his team succeed. “I am fully ready for the final match and determined to win the title and return the team to the podium,” Hamdallah said. “We will enter the match with great enthusiasm and aim to please the fans by winning the title.”  Related Story

US, Iran seize ships as Hormuz in crosshairs

Ships and boats in the Strait of Hormuz, Musandam, Oman, Wednesday. (Reuters) The United States and Iran have each seized vessels in escalating tit-for-tat maritime actions, as the two-month-old war between Washington and Tehran shows no sign of resolution despite an uneasy ceasefire.Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy captured two container ships — the Panama-flagged MSC Francesca and the Liberia-flagged Epaminondas — as they attempted to exit the Strait of Hormuz Wednesday, marking Tehran's first seizures since the conflict began in February. A third vessel, the Liberia-flagged Euphoria, was fired upon but escaped undamaged, later reaching Fujairah in the UAE.On the other side of the standoff, the US military has intercepted at least three Iranian-flagged tankers in Asian waters — diverting them away from positions near India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka — while US Central Command said it had directed 29 vessels in total to turn around or return to port since imposing its blockade.Iran's Tasnim news agency reported the seizures, with the IRGC Navy warning that any disruption to order and safety in the strait would constitute a "red line." The Epaminondas, operated by Greek firm Technomar Shipping, reported being struck by gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades from an IRGC gunboat about 20 nautical miles northwest of Oman, sustaining damage to its bridge. Its 21-strong crew of Ukrainians and Filipinos was reported safe. The vessel is believed to be heading to Bandar Abbas. The MSC Francesca was hit by gunfire about eight nautical miles west of Iran but was not damaged. Montenegro's maritime affairs minister confirmed four Montenegrin seafarers were aboard and said negotiations with the Iranian side were under way.Among the Iranian vessels intercepted by US forces, the supertanker Dorena — fully loaded with 2mn barrels of crude — was last seen off southern India's coast three days ago and is now under escort by a US Navy destroyer in the Indian Ocean. The Iranian-flagged Deep Sea supertanker, partly loaded, was last seen off Malaysia a week ago, while the smaller Sevin, carrying 65% of its 1 million-barrel capacity, was also intercepted near Malaysia. US forces may also have intercepted the Derya tanker, which failed to discharge its Iranian oil cargo in India before a sanctions waiver expired on Sunday.The strait, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's daily oil and gas supply transits, has seen traffic collapse from around 130 vessels a day to just a handful. Iran imposed restrictions following US and Israeli bombing raids on 28 February, effectively bringing commercial traffic to a standstill. The disruption has triggered the worst energy supply shock in history, pushing Brent crude above $100 a barrel Wednesday for the first time in more than two weeks as global consumption outpaces supply and reserves dwindle."The latest seizures make clear, even an 'open' Strait of Hormuz is not a safe Strait of Hormuz for seafarers, ships and cargo," said Peter Sand, chief analyst at freight intelligence platform Xeneta.Peace talks remain on hold, with the fate of the waterway unresolved. "The Iran war and strait closing are unprecedented and there is no line of sight on a final outcome and timing, creating the potential for more headline noise and volatility," wrote Jonathan Chappell, senior managing director at investment bank Evercore.A Western maritime security source said US forces were deliberately targeting Iranian vessels in open waters rather than near the strait itself, to avoid the hazard of floating mines during operations.  Related Story
