Please refer to the report about the passing away of Ted Turner. Ted Turner was a great entrepreneur and visionary. The news in the world emanates round the clock, for 24 hours. He had the foresight to recognise this global hunger for news, at all times and cater to it. In a sense, he revolutionised news broadcasting. He will always be remembered with respect for adding value to our lives and as an institution builder.
In the year 2002, I was posted in a country in Africa. I had just moved there and was temporarily staying in a service apartment. Early one morning, rebels attacked the capital of the country. There was fierce fighting between the rebels and government troops in the entire city. We were told to remain ensconced in our rooms.
However, we could hear the sounds of bullets outside. It was a fearful time. I put on the television to find out what was happening in the city. The local stations were giving some news but in the local language only, which I could not understand.
I did not know what was happening. I was lost and naturally petrified with the bullet sounds all around my room. Finally, around noon, I saw that CNN was covering the strife. Then, I was able to understand what was happening. For the next few days CNN and their anchor Hala Gorani became my saviours, in that lonely room.
I was immensely grateful to Mr. Ted Turner for starting CNN and operating in countries in Africa too.
