The United Arab Emirates has affirmed that food security is an integral component of international peace and security, stressing that safeguarding global food supplies requires safe humanitarian corridors, open ports and stable, resilient supply chains.
Speaking during a high-level United Nations Security Council session on food security, the UAE condemned what it described as Iran’s illegal practices and obstruction of freedom of navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz. It also denounced threats and attacks carried out by groups linked to Iran, warning that such actions risk disrupting vital trade routes and aggravating vulnerabilities in global food and commodity markets.
The UAE cautioned against the politicisation of supply chains and the use of international maritime corridors as instruments of political or economic pressure. It stressed that the free and secure movement of goods is essential to preventing disruptions that could worsen food insecurity, particularly in vulnerable countries that rely heavily on international imports.
The UAE called on Iran to comply fully with UN Security Council Resolution 2817 and demanded the complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without conditions. It emphasised that freedom of navigation must be guaranteed in accordance with international law, underscoring the strategic waterway’s importance to global trade, energy supplies and food security.
The UAE reiterated that protecting critical maritime routes is a shared international responsibility and urged collective efforts to ensure uninterrupted and secure supply chains.
