A boxing event in Dubai that was on the brink of cancellation amid regional uncertainty staged an impressive comeback, drawing a packed crowd after a community-led initiative rallied residents and business leaders behind the fight night.

The event, held on April 14 under the Fight Gecko Combat Series banner, was originally headlined by professional boxer Warren Spencer.

Spencer had invited Canadian professional boxer and social media personality Tristan Hamm to Dubai after witnessing the transformation the fighter achieved under renowned boxing coach BJ Flores, who previously trained influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

Hamm initially travelled to Dubai with members of his training camp, including undefeated professional boxer Jordan Ginnis (7-0), to support Spencer’s preparations. He was later added to the fight card as a featured fighter.

However, the regional tensions resulted in nearly a 98 per cent ticket refund rate and placing the event at risk of cancellation.

Determined to keep the event alive, Hamm launched a grassroots campaign titled “Spirit of Dubai.” Using direct outreach and social media engagement, he rallied residents, entrepreneurs and content creators to support the fight night.

Within just two weeks, the initiative transformed the event’s fortunes. The arena filled with nearly 1,500 attendees, including more than 400 influencers, entrepreneurs, real estate developers and business leaders.

To encourage community participation, Hamm also donated tickets worth approximately $200,000 to UAE residents, allowing many to experience their first live boxing event.

The final fight card featured a WBA world title defence, four professional bouts and exhibition matches involving Dubai-based entrepreneurs and influencers. The evening delivered several knockout finishes, including victories by both Hamm and Spencer.

Clips from Hamm’s knockout quickly gained global traction online, surpassing 500 million views on Instagram.

“Dubai has always shown incredible resilience. Even during uncertain times, the city’s energy and community spirit stand strong. The response to this event proved that people here believe in showing up and supporting each other,” Hamm said.

Among the attendees was Dubai-based art dealer Joelle Dinnage, who highlighted the event’s broader cultural and business impact.

“The FightGecko Entrepreneurs Fight Night brought together an exceptional network of entrepreneurs, investors and global business leaders in one space. Events like this showcase Dubai as a unique hub where business, culture and elite networks converge. Tristan Hamm’s performance and presence added tremendous energy to the evening and truly captured the ambitious spirit that defines Dubai,” Dinnage said.
