In yet another story of courage written every day by the heroes of the Sharjah Civil Defense Authority, a newborn baby was given a second chance at safety after becoming trapped by smoke inside an apartment where a fire broke out in the early hours of Friday morning in Al Nasserya.
As her family endured moments of fear and uncertainty, firefighting and rescue teams raced to the scene in a mission to save lives and prevent the situation from escalating.
Within minutes, what began as an emergency response evolved into a delicate humanitarian rescue operation carried out by men accustomed to confronting danger and restoring hope in the most challenging circumstances.
The incident began during the quiet hours before dawn, when life inside a residential building was proceeding as usual and a young family was enjoying a peaceful night’s rest.
Inside the second-floor apartment, the newborn baby slept near her family, unaware that only a few minutes separated her from a life-threatening situation.
Outside, the city remained calm, with most residents fast asleep, until the emergency call shattered the silence and triggered the mobilisation of Civil Defense teams, turning an ordinary night into a race against time to save lives.
At 1:35 am, the Operations Room of the Sharjah Civil Defense Authority received a report of a fire inside a residential apartment. Upon receiving the initial information, response procedures were immediately activated at the highest level of readiness.
Firefighting and rescue teams from the Administration Fire and Rescue Center, Samnan Fire and Rescue Center, and Al Mina Fire and Rescue Center were dispatched to the scene.
Within minutes, emergency vehicles were making their way through the streets while responders prepared to confront a situation whose full details were still unknown.
In incidents of this nature, neither the scale of the danger nor the number of occupants inside can be determined in advance, which is why every emergency call is treated as a mission to save lives potentially at risk.
Upon arrival, the first responders observed smoke rising from one of the apartments. It was quickly determined that the fire had originated from an air-conditioning unit inside the second-floor apartment.
However, the greatest threat was not the flames themselves but the dense smoke that had begun spreading throughout the residence, reducing visibility and endangering the occupants.
In such situations, smoke often poses a greater risk than fire, particularly to children and the elderly. From the outset, the teams recognized that time was critical and that every passing minute demanded faster and more precise action.
Demonstrating a highly coordinated and professional response, the teams divided into specialised groups. One team focused on extinguishing the fire and preventing its spread, while another concentrated on reaching the residents and ensuring their safe evacuation.

The rapid response and seamless coordination among the various teams demonstrated a high level of operational readiness and contributed to bringing the incident to a close without any injuries, despite the sensitivity of the situation and the challenging conditions involved.
Brigadier General Yousef Obaid Yousef Harmoul Al Shamsi, Director-General of the Sharjah Civil Defense Authority (SCDA), affirmed that the outcome of this incident reflects the high level of preparedness and dedication demonstrated by Civil Defense personnel in carrying out their humanitarian duty, emphasizing that saving lives remains the foremost objective of every emergency response operation.
He said: “Civil Defense personnel make tremendous efforts and face a wide range of risks to protect the community and safeguard lives and property. In every mission, they embody the values of courage, responsibility, and humanitarian commitment. What we witnessed in this incident, in terms of rapid response and effective field coordination, reflects the competence of our teams and their constant readiness to deal with various emergency situations around the clock.”
As the operation concluded and calm returned to the area, the emotions left behind by the experience remained with everyone who witnessed it. For the baby’s family, it was far more than a fire that had been extinguished, it was the moment they regained what mattered most.
