Indian content creator Rachna Gurjar’s home in the Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh, was robbed shortly after she posted videos on social media showcasing jewellery, cash, and details from inside her house.
Anonymous persons sneaked into the house late at night by cutting the outer fence, before closing the family’s bedroom door from the outside, trapping her and her husband inside the room during the robbery.
Gurjar and her husband woke up in the early hours of dawn to find themselves trapped inside the room. They contacted relatives living near the house, who rushed to the place and opened the door and rescued them.
After they got out, they discovered that the thieves had stolen gold and silver jewelry, cash, and other belongings from the house, with a total estimated value between 800,000 and 1 million Indian rupees.
Indian police have launched an investigation into the incident, noting that the perpetrators carried out the operation in an organised way, premeditatedly changing the direction of surveillance cameras using primitive tools to avoid revealing their identities.
Authorities are considering the possibility that the influencer’s display of her possessions online may have contributed to her being targeted, given that the attackers relied on information available through social media platforms.
The incident sparked a wide debate about the risks of publishing personal life details and displays of wealth online, and the direct security threats that may result from it.
