French President Macron urges EU chief to ban social medi…

French President Emmanuel Macron has asked European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to deliver a “European legislative text” to ban children aged under 15 from social media to “protect all children in the Union”, according to a letter seen by AFP on Monday.

A French proposal banning under 15s from social media was struck down in August by France’s Constitutional Council, although Macron reaffirmed he hoped to “find a way forward” in the coming months via a “revised piece of legislation” at national level which would be “in accordance with EU law and our Constitution.”

In a letter dated August 29 to von der Leyen he stated it was “now essential to go further and harmonise this provision through a new European text.”
