Driver following GPS ends up on Seattle light rail tracks

A 70-year-old woman accidentally drove her car onto Seattle’s elevated light rail tracks on Tuesday evening after reportedly following directions from her GPS, causing a major disruption to public transport services.

The incident occurred near Mount Baker Station and led to a suspension of Sound Transit’s 1 Line service for approximately two hours. According to witnesses, the driver said her navigation system had guided her onto the tracks. She reportedly continued driving for a considerable distance before the vehicle became stuck on the northbound rail line.

Video footage of the unusual incident was shared on social media by DUBSEA, an Instagram account that covers news and culture in Seattle.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene. Seattle Fire personnel assisted the woman out of the vehicle before she was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Authorities said no injuries were reported.

To safely remove the car, power to the rail tracks was temporarily shut off. The disruption affected several stations and routes, including services between SODO, Beacon Hill, Mount Baker, Columbia City, Othello, Lynnwood and Federal Way.

Transit crews worked to clear the tracks and restore operations. Sound Transit later confirmed that normal service resumed at approximately 9 p.m. after the vehicle had been successfully removed from the rail corridor.
