Mbappe strikes again as France beat Morocco to reach World Cup semi-finals

Kylian Mbappe recovered from having a first-half penalty saved to score a magnificent opener that set France on their way to a 2-0 win over Morocco in their World Cup quarter-final showdown on Thursday.Mbappe's weak spot-kick was easily saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, but he made up for that by producing a brilliant curling finish to make it 1-0 on the hour mark.That was Mbappe's eighth goal at the tournament, moving him level again with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot, before he came off late on and watched the final minutes with an ice pack around his right ankle.Before exiting, he set up Ousmane Dembele to run through and settle the contest watched by 63,811 at the Gillette Stadium, as France knocked Morocco out, just as they did in 2022.Their 2-0 win four years ago in Qatar came in the semi-finals, and this time the victory for Les Bleus takes them through to the last four. They will face Spain or Belgium in Dallas next Tuesday. LOOKING AT THIRD CONSECUTIVE FINALFrance are looking to reach a third consecutive World Cup final in their last tournament before long-serving coach Didier Deschamps stands down.Winners in 2018 and runners-up in 2022, it has felt like they have eased through to another semi-final and they were too strong for a Moroccan team lacking firepower in the absence of the injured Ismael Saibari.Mbappe is one of the greatest goal-scorers of his generation, and the World Cup continues to bring the very best out of him.After netting braces in the group-stage wins over Senegal and Iraq, as well as the last-32 defeat of Sweden, he got the only goal from the penalty spot against Paraguay in the last round.He has now scored 20 goals in 20 World Cup appearances, within one goal of Messi's overall tournament record of 21.More could have been expected from Morocco, who had more of the crowd behind them but lacked a cutting edge in attack as France kept a third clean sheet in as many knockout games.DEMBELE ON TARGETNevertheless, they have plenty of exciting young talents -- including former France Under-21 captain Ayyoub Bouaddi in their midfield -- and will surely be a force to be reckoned with again when they co-host the next World Cup in 2030 alongside Spain and Portugal.On Thursday they were just the latest team to find containing Mbappe at a World Cup to be an impossible task.The Real Madrid star provoked the penalty as he was scythed down in the area by Noussair Mazraoui after a quick breakaway in the 25th minute.Argentinian referee Facundo Tello immediately pointed to the spot, although a review was needed to rule out a foul on Moroccan captain Achraf Hakimi in the build-up.Maybe the wait got to Mbappe, whose kick was uncharacteristically weak and easily stopped. It was a reminder that he remains human, just like Messi who has squandered two penalties at this World Cup. KEPT FRANCE AT BAYThe excellent Bounou frequently kept France at bay in the first half, notably tipping a Desire Doue shot around the post after Bouaddi was robbed of the ball.Lucas Digne crashed a shot onto the top of the bar from distance as the opening half ended goalless, but France got the reward for their pressure 15 minutes after the restart.Doue slipped the ball to Mbappe just outside the area, and he controlled before using Issa Diop as a screen to direct a superb strike into the net.France's all-time leading marksman now has 64 international goals from 104 appearances.His lay-off in the 66th minute allowed Dembele to advance on goal and curl a shot low into the same corner, a hand from Bounou proving unable to make it 2-0.Dembele is the reigning Ballon d'Or and now has five goals at this World Cup, but Mbappe continues to hog the limelight.   Related Story

(Reuters) Reigning champion Tadej Pogacar stamped his authority on the Tour de France on Thursday, winning the mountainous sixth stage and reclaiming the race leader's yellow jersey.Pogacar now leads by 2min 42sec from his main rival Jonas Vingegaard, who finished second on the 186km Pyrenean stage from Pau to Gavarnie-Gedre to move up to second overall."Today I woke up at seven in the morning already and my mind was going crazy so I was really really excited for today," said Pogacar, who broke the record for the fastest time up the Tourmalet on the way to his 23rd Tour stage victory."All the guys (his team-mates) were really hyped so I knew it would be a good day."We just committed, we were going like nothing to lose. If we explode, they explode but in the end we succeeded and I'm super proud."Pogacar's team-mate Isaac Del Toro beat Remco Evenepoel in the sprint for third to leapfrog the Olympic champion in the standings for third overall at 3:27.Norwegian Torstein Traeen had started the day in yellow but he lost contact with the lead group before the halfway point of the punishing Tourmalet climb with around 50 kilometres still to ride, and from then on it was clear that his grip on the jersey was gone.To make matters worse he crashed on the descent - his second spill in as many days.Pogacar's UAE Emirates-XRG team ramped up the pace on the two Pyrenean behemoths, the Col d'Aspin and Col du Tourmalet, on another scorching day in southwestern France where temperatures agin hit 40C.The world champion attacked about 4km from the summit of the Tourmalet and he quickly gapped his rivals.At the summit, Pogacar led Vingegaard by 30 seconds with Paul Seixas, Florian Lipowitz and Del Toro another minute behind.Other contenders Evenepoel and Juan Ayuso were in a small group a further 20sec back.On the descent and then the final long but gentle climb to the finish, Pogacar gradually extended his lead, all but suffocating any hope of his rivals challenging him for the overall victory this year.Vingegaard battled to limit his losses while behind him the two chasing groups merged but failed to cooperate effectively. Devastating attack  After a rapid start and a relentless battle to make it into the day's breakaway, Australian Ben O'Connor got away on his own with a little more than 100km to ride. But his lone foray did not last long before UAE reeled him in.On the Col d'Aspin, the second-most used climb at the Tour, their pace proved too much for Frenchman Alex Baudin, who started the day in the King of the Mountains jersey -- it would finish the day on Pogacar's shoulders.Then American Sean Quinn and Czech Mathias Vacek, who began the day second and third in the standings, were also dropped, but Traeen hung in for the time being.The 17km-long and steeper Tourmalet, the most used climb in the Tour which takes riders to more than 2,100 metres above sea level, Traeen was the next lose touch.It was the first of the Tour's toughest hors-category climbs and Pogacar's team was doing what they do best: driving hard and whittling down the number of riders able to keep up.It was only a matter of time before Pogacar attacked, and when he did, it was devastating.   Related Story

Russia has appealed their World Athletics Ban and have approached the top court CAS to overturn the decision. (Reuters) The Russian Athletics Federation (RAF) announced on Thursday they will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) challenging World Athletics (WA) extending the blanket ban on their track and field athletes."Russian Athletics notes that World Athletics' decision affects the fundamental interests of athletics in Russia and restricts Russian athletes' right to compete, on grounds that Russian Athletics considers discriminatory," read the federation's statement.WA responded saying: "We take note of the Russian athletics federation's appeal to CAS, and we will be strenuously defending our position."Last Friday, WA announced that the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes - imposed in March 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine - would remain in place.WA president Sebastian Coe said the body's Council Meeting had "been consequential and methodical in reviewing the sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus and in identifying a conditional pathway back into international competition"."We presented options for the Council to consider on this matter, however, the original decision remains on the sanctions that protect the integrity and fairness of our competitions, with no tangible movement towards peace negotiations having materialised."WA's stand has been in contrast with other federations - World Gymnastics and the International Skating Union the latest to ease restrictions.Those came before this week's announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that under strict conditions Russian athletes would be allowed to compete in team events and qualifying competitions for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles."We made it clear that we wanted to ensure all athletes have the possibility to compete at the Olympic Games and not be held responsible for their government's actions," IOC president Kirsty Coventry said after an Executive Board meeting in Lausanne. 'Ambulances and hearses'However, the IOC kept in place the ban on the Russian national anthem being played and the flag being displayed, for the time being, and stipulated returning Russian athletes would have to pass "multiple" doping tests before being allowed to participate.The IOC said individual sports could decide whether to allow the flag and anthem at their own events or stage competitions in Russia.Ukraine slammed the IOC decision as "premature" and "unfounded" while Moscow's invasion drags on through its fifth year.Athletics global governing body examined the impact of the conflict on athletics in Ukraine."The dedicated fund that World Athletics established in 2022 to support Ukraine is helping ameliorate some of that impact, but there is no doubt the ability of Ukraine and its athletes to train and compete remains severely compromised," WA said.Coe has said if a peace agreement is reached then it is not for sport to stand in the way of the Russians' return.The conflict, though, has left its mark on Coe after a visit he paid to Ukraine."When you get to Kyiv (train station), there's probably 50 or 60 ambulances and hearses waiting on the platform," he told AFP in an interview last year."Families waiting for the news. They have two carriages, mobile operating theatres and intensive care units, where amputations are taking place as the train's coming back."So, sorry, it's not something I could ever really be neutral about."  Related Story

(AFP) Teenage Australian sprint star Gout Gout on Thursday pulled out of next month's World Athletics U20 Championships after suffering a serious hamstring injury in training.The 18-year-old has set the athletics world alight with a series of scorching runs.He won the 200m at the Australian championships in April in 19.67sec, faster than Usain Bolt at the same age, and made his Diamond League debut last month in Oslo.Gout chose to skip the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this month to focus on the under-20 world championships at Eugene in August, but his season has come to an abrupt halt."Unfortunately I suffered an injury to my left hamstring last night at training in Brisbane," he said on Instagram."I received this morning the MRI report, unfortunately the news is not good and I will not be able to compete in Eugene at the world U20 championships next month."Gout said the scans revealed a grade three tear, which typically takes months of rehabilitation."My focus now will be on my rehab in the coming weeks and months and ensuring I come back in 2027 better and stronger and faster," he said.Athletics Australia said it would support him in his recovery."Gout has had a phenomenal couple of years, and has a long and exciting athletics career ahead of him," a spokesperson said."While this will be disappointing for Gout himself as well as his many fans, unfortunately injuries are part of the sport. "It is important that he takes the time to rehabilitate, recover and return to the track to compete when he is ready."   Related Story
