(AFP) Ben Kohles completed his bogey-free first round with an eagle for a two-stroke lead at 9-under-par 62 on Thursday at the 3M Open in Blaine, Minn.World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, making his debut in the tournament at TPC Twin Cities, is three shots back, tied for fifth after his bogey-free 65. Scheffler started his round at No. 10 and was 2 under on the back nine with birdies ⁠at Nos. 12 and 18, then heated up with birdies at Nos. 1, 4, 6 and 7."Golf's funny. Some days you're hitting your lines ⁠and the line seems to be tracking toward the hole and other days it feels like you're doing the same thing and it kind of goes around the hole," Scheffler said, "but today was a day in which I was able to hole some nice putts and that's why I was able to make some birdies out there."Kohles, 36, is ranked No. 128 in the world and seeking his first win on the PGA Tour. He finished tied for third at the John Deere Classic on July 5.He birdied Nos. 2, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 15, then made eagle with a ⁠4-foot putt on the par-5 18th hole to conclude his career-best round."Yeah, it feels great obviously when you can get a low one out early, especially early in the tournament," said Kohles, who has divided this season between the PGA and Korn Ferry tours. "I was just in control all day. Honestly, I've played really well here the last few years, I really like this golf course. This is a wind that we kind of had most of the time, so just a comfortable wind so I feel like I'm just comfortable out here. Obviously made some nice putts. Just hit a lot close that I was able to capitalize on."Kohles ranked first on Thursday in greens in regulation (17 of ⁠18), tied for third in driving accuracy (12 of 14, 85.7%) and ranked 39th in ⁠feet of putts made (82 feet, 7 ⁠inches). Jackson Koivun, Gary Woodland and Argentina's Emiliano Grillo are tied for second after each shot 7-under 64."Any day beating Scottie Scheffler is a good day, so I'll take that," said Grillo, who birdied Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14, then lost strokes with bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17 before a birdie at 18. "Yeah, got off to a good start obviously. Not often you birdie the first couple holes and I was able to finish with a 4 after a few mistakes there on 16 and 17."Scheffler is tied at 6 under with Lucas Glover, Michael Brennan, Kevin Roy and Sweden's Jesper Svensson. Scheffler tied for first in scrambling (3-for-3) and sand saves (1-for-1), while he was fourth in feet of putts made (134-6).Defending champion Kurt Kitayama is tied for 26th at 3-under 68. He opened with the first of his seven birdies, including No. 1 and 18, but was undermined by a bogey at the par-4 No. 3 and a triple bogey at the par-4 No. 9.   Related Story

Jurgen Klopp has been named Germany coach, the former Liverpool manager given the task of rebuilding the struggling European giants, the national federation (DFB) announced on Friday.Klopp's appointment was widely expected for weeks and his contract will see him through to the 2030 World Cup co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, as well as the three centenary matches planned for that year in South America.The 59-year-old spoke publicly of his desire to take on the role after predecessor Julian Nagelsmann's resignation earlier in July.Nagelsmann fell on his sword after a disappointing last-32 defeat at the hands of Paraguay, Germany's third consecutive early World Cup exit since winning the tournament in 2014.As the German FA's preferred candidate, Klopp's willingness to take the job accelerated Nagelsmann's departure."It's a great honour for me to be sitting here today," Klopp told a press conference called by the DFB to announce his appointment in Frankfurt."This is ideally the high point of my career, of my life, my professional life. I will give it everything I have," he said.However he warned the assembled reporters that "if you tomorrow you start saying: 'He's crap', then I'm off".DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said Klopp's contract would start on August 15 and run until summer 2030.Since 2025, Klopp has been under contract until 2029 with Austrian energy drink maker Red Bull as "Head of Global Soccer", where he oversaw the football clubs affiliated with the company such as RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls.Neuendorf thanked Red Bull for their willingness to end the contract early as Klopp would need his "full concentration" for the new job.The DFB did not have to pay a fee but will instead make a donation of a million euros ($1.1m) to Red Bull's Wings for Life charity foundation, which supports research into spinal cord injuries. World Cup failureHaving repeatedly said his time in the dugout was over, Klopp returns with the mammoth task of returning the struggling Germans to the top of the international game.Germany have won four World Cups - the equal most of any European team - and three European Championships, one behind record holders Spain, but have struggled in recent years.The team crashed out of this summer's World Cup after losing to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32.It was the third successive World Cup failure for the Germans since winning their fourth title in 2014.In a decade since making the semi-finals of Euro 2016, Germany have won just one knockout match across three World Cups and two Euros.Having also tasted success as manager of Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, Klopp stepped down as Liverpool coach in 2024 after a wildly successful spell, winning all available trophies.Under Klopp, Liverpool won the Premier League to break a 30-year drought and lifted the Champions League trophy for the sixth time.The DFB had long courted Klopp and believed he was the perfect candidate to take over from Nagelsmann.Klopp will work alongside Rudi Voeller, the 1990 World Cup winning striker has been the team's sporting director since autumn 2023 and whose contract runs for another two years.The challenges facing Klopp and his staff are numerous.The new coach will look to build the team round the young talent of Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, both 23.Joshua Kimmich has worn the captain's armband since autumn 2024, but will be 33 by the time of Euro 2028.In goal, Manuel Neuer came out of international retirement for one last stint at the World Cup at the age of 40.Klopp's hotly anticipated first squad will come in mid-September for four Nations League matches, the first being against the Netherlands on September 24.  Related Story

Mark van Bommel is the new coach of the Belgian national football team, the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) announced on Friday.The 49-year-old former Dutch international succeeds Frenchman Rudi Garcia, who stepped down having guided the 'Red Devils' to the World Cup quarter-finals."Mark van Bommel has signed a contract that will see him lead Belgium's national team through UEFA EURO 2028," read an RBFA statement.Van Bommel, who was an uncompromising midfielder and key member of the robust Netherlands side that lost to Spain in the 2010 World Cup final, said it was a "great honour" to have been appointed."I would like to thank the Royal Belgian Football Association for their confidence in me," he said."Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential."Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best."Success is never guaranteed, but hard work, honesty and commitment are."After hanging up his boots in 2013, Van Bommel has cut his teeth as coach of PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg and Antwerp.Van Bommel has been without a team since departing Belgian top-flight club Antwerp in June 2024, a year after having guided them to a first league title in 66 years.Belgium, made up of a mix of the last of their ageing 'golden generation' and younger talent, improved as the World Cup went on.They exited after being beaten 2-1 by eventual champions Spain, though they had the consolation of being the only team to breach the Spanish defence.Local media reported differences of opinion between Garcia and several players, as well as with technical director Vincent Mannaert, who was unhappy with certain group-stage performances.Garcia's departure, however, was met with bewilderment by many supporters on social media.However, according to the media, Belgian football chiefs were keen to hire a younger coach than 62-year-old Garcia.They achieved that aim with van Bommel."I am truly delighted that Mark van Bommel and his assistants have agreed to take on this challenge," said Mannaert."They are highly motivated and ambitious, and I am convinced that, with their international experience as both coaches and players, they will be perfectly placed to help our Belgian Red Devils continue to improve, achieve results and reach their full potential, both individually and as a team."Van Bommel's first challenge will be three Nations League matches, beginning with Italy on September 25.  Related Story

(AFP) West Indies and Pakistan meet at Test cricket's newest venue in Trinidad on Saturday at the start of a two-match series in which the home side will be enjoying rare favoured status against the unsettled visitors.Brian Lara Stadium, located in the south of the island, has previously hosted one-day and T20 internationals along with regional first-class fixtures.It becomes the nation's second Test match venue and 13th in the West Indies, drawing it alongside Queen's Park Oval in the capital, Port of Spain, the venue of the second Test a week later.Roston Chase enjoyed his first match and series wins as West Indies Test captain just three weeks ago when the Caribbean team demolished Sri Lanka by an innings and 217 runs and then played out a draw in the second and final Test, both matches played in Antigua.Chase missed the recent ODI series loss to New Zealand with an injury to his right index finger."Roston is a fighter. I know he's not going to want to miss any Test cricket," West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said."I'm pretty sure Dr. Byam (team physio Denis Byam) has a way of keeping guys on the park, so I'm pretty sure Roston will be ready for the first Test."It was their first home Test series triumph since a 2-0 sweep of Bangladesh in 2022, a result which also gave them their last consecutive series wins anywhere as the whitewash of the Bangladeshis was preceded by a notable 1-0 home triumph over England in a three-Test contest.West Indies are not expected to make significant alterations to the winning combination from the Sri Lankan series, although left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican is likely to come into consideration at the expense of fast-medium bowler Anderson Phillip given the expectation of a pitch favouring spin later in the match.In stark contrast, Pakistan have once again revamped their squad in the aftermath of a 2-0 series loss in Bangladesh two months ago with senior batsman Babar Azam returning as captain in place of Shan Masood in hope of reviving their Test fortunes.Babar and opening batsman Azan Awais both compiled hundreds in the lone warm-up match against a West Indies Select XI at the weekend while most of the other main batsmen also got confidence-boosting runs.However the most encouraging aspect of the match in batting-friendly conditions for the tourists was the bowling of pacer Mohammad Ali, who took five wickets in the first innings and will be relied upon, together with the other members of the restructured pace armoury, to give Pakistan a chance to end a miserable run of seven consecutive Test match losses away from home.Their last visit to the Caribbean in 2021 finished in a 1-1 draw after two Tests in Kingston while the teams' most recent Test encounters were in the spin-dominant Multan in January of 2025 when the West Indies trumped Pakistan at their own game in the second match to also leave that series at 1-1.This meeting of two unpredictable sides carries the additional dimension of intervention by the elements as the July/August period is usually one of significant rainfall in the southern Caribbean.While Trinidad has enjoyed hot, sunny conditions in the days leading up to the first Test, there is certainly no guarantee that such pleasant cricketing weather will be sustained over the fortnight of this short series.  Related Story
