Artificial Intelligence is transforming economies, governance and global influence, and India is emerging as one of its most influential players. Once known primarily as the world’s software hub, India is now positioning itself as a leader in AI by combining innovation with inclusion, affordability and democratic values.
A key driver is the India AI Mission, backed by ₹10,372 crore, which aims to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem spanning computing infrastructure, research, startups and workforce development. Unlike countries where AI resources are concentrated among a few corporations, India is creating shared computing facilities with over 38,000 GPUs, giving startups, researchers and students affordable access to advanced AI infrastructure.
India’s strength also lies in its talent pool. Ranked third globally in Stanford University’s 2025 Global AI Vibrancy Ranking, after the US and China, India leads the world in AI talent acquisition and has AI skill penetration 2.5 times the global average. With 87% of enterprises already adopting AI solutions and the market projected to reach $131.31 billion by 2032, India is becoming a major engine of global AI growth.
AI has also become central to India’s diplomacy. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagements in France and the G7 Summit, AI featured prominently in discussions on innovation, digital infrastructure, research and responsible technology. The Bharat Innovates 2026 event showcased India’s capabilities in AI, fintech, healthcare, space and deep technology, reinforcing its growing international influence.
India’s approach to AI governance sets it apart. Rather than imposing restrictive regulations, it seeks a balanced framework that promotes innovation while addressing concerns over privacy, bias, misinformation, cybersecurity and digital sovereignty. This pragmatic model is attracting attention from both advanced and developing economies.
India’s Digital Public Infrastructure—including Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker and BHASHINI—provides a strong foundation for AI-driven public services. These platforms have become global models for scalable and affordable digital governance.
India’s AI rise is especially significant for the Gulf. As countries such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia invest heavily in AI and digital infrastructure, India offers complementary strengths in technology talent, digital platforms and innovation. Partnerships in AI research, data centres, fintech, healthcare, smart cities and language technologies could become a new pillar of India-Gulf relations.
As AI reshapes the global economy, India is emerging not just as a technology adopter but as a nation helping define the future of artificial intelligence through innovation, inclusion and responsible governance.
