French President Emmanuel Macron was seen jogging through the streets of Alexandria during his visit to Egypt.

A video widely shared on social media showed Macron and members of his accompanying delegation taking part in a morning run along Khaled Bin Al Waleed Street — one of Alexandria’s busiest roads — while presidential convoy vehicles followed behind them.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi toured the city of Alexandria on Saturday evening alongside Macron, in the presence of heads of delegations participating in the inauguration of the new headquarters of Senghor University, as well as Louise Mushikiwabo.

According to Mohamed El Shennawy, spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, the two presidents toured the Alexandria Corniche promenade, reaching the entrance of the historic Citadel of Qaitbay. They listened to a briefing on the fortress’s history and received a detailed presentation on underwater archaeological excavations related to the remains of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria.

The presentation was delivered by Dr Mohamed El Sayed, senior inspector at Egypt’s General Administration of Underwater Antiquities, and Dr Thomas Foucher, head of the Alexandria Studies Centre affiliated with the French Ministry of Scientific Research. They reviewed various archaeological and historical treasures recovered from different eras.

The spokesperson added that President Sisi later hosted a dinner banquet in honour of the French president, his delegation, and the heads of participating delegations attending the Senghor University inauguration.

Sisi renewed his welcome to Macron in Egypt, praising the growing momentum in bilateral relations across multiple sectors and expressing his desire to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries in culture, tourism, archaeology, and the arts.

For his part, Macron expressed deep appreciation for visiting Alexandria, describing it as a global beacon of knowledge and culture, as well as a key centre for Mediterranean cooperation throughout history. He reaffirmed France’s commitment to deepening cultural ties between the Egyptian and French peoples and enhancing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
