The US Department of Commerce loosened export controls on the United Arab Emirates yesterday, making it easier to export military items, certain commercial satellites and spacecraft, according to a US government posting in the Federal Register.The UAE government and approved companies also will now be able to access advanced computing items license-free, the posting said. UAE companies G42 and Core42 and US companies operating in the country, including Amazon, Apple, and xAI, are among those that no longer need licenses for AI chips and servers. In providing the more favorable treatment for certain exports to the UAE, the Commerce Department said the US had worked with the country for decades to counter Iran and its proxies, including Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis."More recently, the UAE played a key role advancing US interests during Operation Epic Fury," the posting said, referring to the US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began in February. Additionally, it noted, the UAE was the largest US trading partner in the Middle East, and that its foreign direct investment in the US was valued at over $1tn. Under the new regulation, the Commerce Department moved the UAE into a country grouping that allows more license exceptions for military and dual-use items controlled by the department. The UAE will be the only country in the group that is not a member of multilateral export control regimes. Other countries in the grouping include Nato countries and other allies. Other countries in the region such as Israel and Saudi Arabia are not members of that group.

We have agreed to do so, but the US has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!" Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Friday.Earlier this week, at a Nato summit, Trump also declared the ceasefire over, but said of Tehran: "It's just a waste of time dealing with them."US and Iranian delegations have held one round of direct talks in Switzerland subsequent to signing their memorandum of understanding, as well as indirect negotiations in Qatar, but there has been no sign of diplomatic progress since.Despite Iran saying it had launched attacks on US assets in Qatar and the Gulf state accusing Tehran of attacking one of its tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, Doha on Friday backed continued diplomacy.Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has also been mediating the conflict, held a call with Qatar's emir on Friday to discuss the recent escalation, Sharif's office said in a statement.However, Iran's chief negotiator in talks with the US, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, struck a defiant tone."Ending the war is a priority for the countries of the world, but everyone must know that this confrontation will never end with Iran's surrender," the ISNA news agency reported him saying.Iranians, he said, were "fully prepared to defend ourselves".The tussle persists over disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran insists it must have control over and has expressed a desire to charge fees for transiting it.It did not have such powers before the war and while the strait comprises Omani and Iranian territorial waters, under international law the two cannot generally block passage or charge tolls.Tehran on Thursday accused the US of hitting civilian targets including railway bridges, branding the strikes a "gross war crime".

North Korea will strengthen its nuclear force 'both in quality and quantity' and expand the role of its military intelligence agency focused on Republic of Korea, state media said .Pyongyang is under widespread sanctions over its nuclear programme, and the two Koreas remain technically at war as their 1950-53 conflict ended without a peace treaty.The announcement comes after North Korea has repeatedly spurned Korean President Lee Jae-myung's dovish overtures, labelling Seoul its 'most hostile' enemy and declaring itself an 'irreversible' nuclear state.The issues were discussed during an enlarged meeting of the ruling party's central military commission on Thursday, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency said.The meeting decided on measures such as 'bolstering up the nuclear force both in quality and quantity', the report said.It also called for broadly expanding the functions and missions of the General Reconnaissance and Intelligence Bureau, Pyongyang's military intelligence agency tasked with operations involving Republic of Korea.The unit 'plays a pivotal role in controlling the potential enemies' threats and gathering key information', KCNA said.The meeting discussed ways to enhance the unit's 'capability of military reconnaissance and intelligence activities in a radical way', it added.Hong Min, a senior researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said North Korea's latest move reflects Pyongyang's shift to treating the two Koreas as 'two hostile states', potentially replacing the previous armistice-based framework.'Military reconnaissance takes on a different meaning under a state-to-state approach, as intelligence activities targeting another sovereign state can carry diplomatic implications,' he told AFP.— Espionage operations —Experts have said that North Korea is likely aiming to acquire military technology, including surveillance satellites, in return for the troops it sent to aid Russia's war against Ukraine.In 2023, the country successfully put a military spy satellite into orbit and claimed it was capturing images of major US and Korean military sites.Republic of Korea's Unification Ministry told AFP it was 'closely monitoring' any developments related to the North Korean unit's reported expansion.Since the end of the Korean War in 1953, North Korea has carried out espionage operations ranging from intelligence-gathering to assassinations, including the 1997 killing of defector Lee Han-young.One of North Korea's best-known spies was Jeong Su-il, who entered Republic of Korea in 1984 posing as Muhammed Kansu, a Filipino-Lebanese academic.After his cover was blown, he served prison terms in Republic of Korea before later becoming a historian specialising in the Silk Road and the history of West Asia.
