France’s youngest PM Attal to run for president

Gabriel Attal, once France's youngest prime minister, said Friday he would run for president next year when Emmanuel Macron steps down, becoming the second prominent centrist to challenge the far right."I can't take this kind of French politics anymore, where it's just 50 shades of managing decline," said the 37-year-old."I have decided to run for president," he said under a blazing sun in the southern village of Mur-de-Barrez.Attal joins a crowded field of candidates, including 55-year-old Edouard Philippe, an experienced centre-right former prime minister, and hard-left firebrand Jean-Luc Melenchon, 74.Attal chose to announce his bid in rural France, where the centrists hope to strengthen their performance against the ascending far-right National Rally (RN) party.National Rally is banking on its best chance yet at winning power next year, with either Marine Le Pen, 57, or Jordan Bardella, 30, running for the country's top job.The newest presidential candidate, an openly gay Parisian known for his confidence and good looks, made history when he became France's youngest ever prime minister at the age of 34 in 2024.He has had a meteoric rise in politics that has invoked comparisons with that of his mentor, and was dubbed by some a "mini-Macron" when he was appointed prime minister.Macron was 39 when he won the Elysee Palace, becoming the youngest ever head of state since Napoleon.Attal will turn 38 next March, just ahead of the presidential election scheduled for April.- 'Communications pro' -In what appeared to be a move laying the ground for his bid at the presidency, Attal opened up about his love life in a book published last month.He devoted a chapter to "the man of my life", European commissioner and former minister Stephane Sejourne.Attal will face fierce competition from Philippe, a former head of government who leads his own Horizons party, and analysts question his ability to lead the centrist camp.One centrist, speaking on condition of anonymity, described Attal as "above all a communications pro"."But that does not at all reflect a coherent political offering."Philippe is currently seen as better placed in polls, which suggest the mayor of the northern city of Le Havre could win the election in a runoff against the far right."Attal will not be president," said a senior member of Philippe's party. "People will not vote for Macron a third time."Attal distanced himself from the unpopular Macron after the president dissolved French parliament's lower house in 2024, cutting short his brief tenure as prime minister.Macron's gamble was intended to stave off the advance of the far right, but the snap polls backfired, leading to months of political deadlock.Attal has quickly risen through the ranks since entering politics in his early 20s.He was elected to France's lower house of parliament in 2017 and later served as government spokesperson and budget minister.As education minister between 2023 and 2024, he tackled bullying and also banned pupils from wearing the abaya, the loose-fitting garment from the shoulders to the feet worn by some Muslim women.Macron's Renaissance party has often been criticised for its weak local roots, and Attal chose to launch his presidential bid in Mur-de-Barrez to send a message of solidarity with ordinary people."The day we stay locked in Parisian offices, in ministries, is the day politics stops," he said.  Related Story

Security personnel speak before the Friday prayers yesterday at the Grand Mosque ahead of the start of Haj in the holy city of Makkah. – Reuters  More than 1mn Muslims are gathering in Makkah for the Haj pilgrimage overshadowed by the Middle East war, as animosity smoulders across the region despite a fragile ceasefire.This year's rites, drawing Muslim worshippers from across the world, including Iran, follow waves of Iranian attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia and its Gulf neighbours.Saudi officials are keen to keep conflict far from the minds of visitors, who have travelled long distances for one of the world's biggest annual pilgrimages.However, for Fatima, a 36-year-old German housewife travelling with her family, "there was no second thought" about coming to Makkah."We know we are at the safest place in the world," she told AFP.As of this week, more than 1.2mn pilgrims had arrived in Saudi Arabia for the multi-day pilgrimage starting on Monday, officials said.Because of the "wartime situation", only about 30,000 Iranian pilgrims out of an expected 86,700 had travelled to Saudi Arabia for Haj, according to the IRNA state news agency.The Haj has been a point of tension in the past between Riyadh and Tehran, with repeated outbreaks of violence and unrest involving Iranian visitors.In the years following Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, Saudi authorities accused Iranian pilgrims of triggering stampedes and other violence, while also chanting political slogans.A Saudi state broadcaster this week posted a warning from the interior ministry saying that any chanting or raising political or sectarian flags was strictly prohibited during the Haj.Relations were severed in 2016 after protesters attacked Saudi Arabia's embassy in Tehran and consulate in the northwestern city of Mashhad.No Iranian pilgrims were allowed that year, as the two sides were unable to organise a protocol for them to attend.Experts, however, said authorities would do their utmost to prevent any unrest from rattling this year's pilgrimage."Saudi Arabia and Iran have kept their political engagement open" despite the war, said Umer Karim, an expert on Saudi foreign policy.The two sides only re-established relations in a surprise 2023 deal brokered by China, which saw tensions ease and embassies reopen in their respective capitals.However, the detente was upended following the US and Israeli attack on Iran in late February that set off Iran's wide-ranging retaliation against its Gulf neighbours.Energy installations, airports, export terminals, ports and other civilian infrastructure were targeted by Tehran, as Iranian attacks on the Strait of Hormuz choked Gulf oil and gas exports to the outside world.Despite the ongoing situation, pilgrims were overcome with emotion as they kickstarted the Haj pilgrimage in Makkah."Haj has been the dream of a lifetime for me," Ahmed Abo Seta, 47, told AFP. "And it is finally coming true."  Related Story

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Washington's NATO allies Friday to face up to US troop cuts in Europe, as the alliance sought to patch over tensions with President Donald Trump ahead of a July summit.After Trump lashed out at allies over their response to his war in Iran, his administration sowed confusion in Europe with a string of announcements on force changes on the continent in the past month.Trump left heads spinning as NATO foreign ministers met in the Swedish city of Helsingborg by announcing he would send 5,000 troops to Poland, in an apparent reversal of Washington earlier calling off the planned deployment.The shift was welcomed by NATO chief Mark Rutte and Poland's foreign minister, but it fuelled concerns about a lack of coordination between the United States and its allies in the face of a menacing Russia."It is confusing indeed, and not always easy to navigate," said Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard.Trump's seeming U-turn came after Washington earlier this month abruptly announced it was withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany following a spat between the US president and Chancellor Friedrich Merz.After the meeting Rubio insisted it was "well understood in the alliance that the United States troop presence in Europe is going to be adjusted"."That work was already ongoing, and it's been done in coordination with our allies," he told journalists."I'm not saying they're going to be thrilled about it, but they certainly are aware of it."The US top diplomat signalled that Washington would soon also announce that it was cutting the number of troops it puts at NATO's disposal in case of an emergency.A string of NATO ministers agreed that US drawdowns were widely expected as Washington focuses on other threats and Europe ramps up its defences."What is important is that it happens in a structured manner, so that Europe is able to build up when the US reduces its presence," Norwegian foreign minister Espen Barth Eide said.- 'Disappointment' -The meeting in Sweden came after Trump hit out at Europeans over their refusal to help out in his war on Iran -- and even threatened to consider quitting NATO.Diplomats hoped it would help turn the page ahead of the alliance's summit in Ankara so that they could focus on showcasing increased spending by Europe.Rubio reiterated Trump's "disappointment" at his allies and said it would "have to be addressed".In a bid to calm the storm, some European allies have dispatched vessels closer to the region to help in the Strait of Hormuz when the war ends.Rubio said he told European countries that they may have to come up with a "Plan B" to help force open the Strait of Hormuz if the war with Iran drags on."I don't know that would be a NATO mission necessarily, but it would certainly be NATO countries that can contribute," he said.- Ankara overshadowed? -Since Trump's return to power last year, NATO has weathered a series of crises including talking him down from trying to seize Greenland.Now the fallout from the Iran war threatens to overshadow the summit in the Turkish capital Ankara.NATO had been hoping to focus on showing Trump that allies were making good on their promise to him at last year's summit to ramp up defence-related spending to five percent of GDP.Diplomats say a spate of arms deals are being lined up to show the US leader that Europe is putting its money where its mouth is."The task ahead is clear to turn allied commitments into concrete results," NATO chief Mark Rutte said.Led by big-spending Germany, there is an increasing mood of steeliness in Europe -- but for now discussions are on building up the continent's role in NATO rather than creating an alternative.French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said it was the moment to "to Europeanise NATO".One area where the Europeans are already standing more on their own is backing Ukraine -- whose president Volodymyr Zelensky will be joining NATO leaders allies in Ankara, Rutte confirmed.The alliance chief is pushing to get European nations to buy more US weapons for Kyiv and more equally share the burden among themselves."At the moment it is only six or seven allies who are doing the heavy lifting."del/ec/ach  Related Story

The risk from the deadly Ebola outbreak has been raised to the highest level for the Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Health Organization said yesterday, as the toll continued to rise. There are now 82 confirmed cases and seven confirmed deaths in the DR Congo, with almost 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths, the WHO said. The outbreak, which experts suspect was circulating under the radar for some time, was caused by the less common Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments. The WHO is prioritising certain existing treatments to see how effective they might be in combating the strain.  Related Story

Qatar handball team secured the silver medal after defeating Saudi Arabia 32-24 at Duhail Sports Hall yesterday as the 4th GCC Games – Doha 2026 came to a close in front of a strong crowd attendance.Hosts Qatar finished on top of the medal standings with 134 medals, including 48 gold, 50 silver and 36 bronze medals. Saudi Arabia came second with 82 medals, while Bahrain occupied third place with 63 medals. United Arab Emirates collected 66 medals overall, while Kuwait and Oman completed the standings.Qatar imposed complete control over the match from the opening minutes thanks to their solid defensive organisation and fast counterattacks, which disrupted the Saudi side. Qatar’s players ended the first half with an eight-goal advantage at 19-11 before continuing their strong display in the second half.  The coaching staff successfully rotated players while maintaining high physical intensity and concentration, allowing Qatar to secure a comfortable victory and raise their tally to six points, confirming second place and the silver medal behind Bahrain, who topped the standings with a perfect eight points to win gold. Saudi Arabia finished third with four points to claim bronze.In a special gesture of appreciation during halftime, the Organising Committee of the 4th GCC Games honoured the official sponsors and strategic partners of the tournament in recognition of their vital logistical and financial support, which contributed directly to the success of the major Gulf event and its outstanding organisation.  Bahrain topped the standings with perfect eight points to win gold. Saudi Arabia’s Khaled al-Eid claimed top honours in the Gold Tour as the 14th and final round of the Qatar Equestrian Tour – Longines Hathab continued at the indoor arena of the Qatar Equestrian Federation.Competing in the Gold Tour Table A special two-phase event over 140cm, al-Eid partnered Rakker Dmc to produce a flawless round in 32.37 seconds to finish first among 17 participants. Qatar’s Faris Saad al-Qahtani riding Gaya des Cours secured second place in 34.34secs, while Sultan Salem al-Naemi aboard Gannan de La Luce finished third in 35.40secs.In the Gold Tour team event, Al Shaqab delivered a strong performance to take first place in 66.36secs. Al Shaqab Academy finished second in 69.62secs, while Alsalam came third in 71.06secs.  The Open Tour accumulator with joker competition over 110cm saw another impressive outing from Khaled al-Hadi of Saudi Arabia, who clinched first and second places. Riding DSP Cessy, he topped the standings with 65 points in 39.74secs, before taking second on Carlton de Sauvageonn with the same score in 40.00secs. Qatar’s Abdulla Faisal al-Mana riding Kontiki Dice completed the podium in third place with 65 points in 40.37secs. In the Junior category, al-Mana secured first place, while Sharida Nasser al-Kaabi finished second riding Gravity and Extra Pam respectively.The Future Riders optimum time competition over 70cm attracted 38 participants, with Mohammed Sami al-Boenain claiming first place aboard Volnay M'Aurea after recording a difference of just 0.04 seconds from the ideal time. Hissa Ali al-Jaber riding Violet Van Het Koetshuis finished second with 0.11, while Abdulaziz Ibrahim al-Baker took third on the same horse with -0.27.The final day of the season concludes today with the Diamond Tour competitions over 150cm, the Bronze Tour individual and team events at 120cm, and the Future Riders contest over 90cm.

(AFP) Michael Carrick said he wanted to make Manchester United challengers for major trophies again after the club confirmed him as their new permanent head coach on a two-year contract on Friday.The former United midfielder and captain has overseen a dramatic improvement in form at Old Trafford since taking over following Ruben Amorim's acrimonious exit in January.Carrick secured Champions League football with three matches to spare and United wrapped up third spot with Sunday's 3-2 Premier League victory against Nottingham Forest – his 11th win in 16 games.The 44-year-old had been backed for the job by a number of players and has now been rewarded with a new deal. "Manchester United is delighted to announce that Michael Carrick will continue as head coach of the men's first team, having signed a new contract which will run to 2028," the club said in a statement on their website.Carrick won five Premier League titles and the Champions League among a cascade of trophies as a player at United under Alex Ferguson. But the club have have not mounted a realistic challenge for the Premier League since Ferguson retired as a champion in 2013, eclipsed as the dominant force in English football by neighbours Manchester City.Carrick said ever since he first arrived at United as a player 20 years ago he had felt the "magic" of the club. Now the former Middlesbrough boss, who has had previous coaching stints at United, wants to build on his achievements since January."It's good to make steps, good to get in the Champions League, good to finish third, but (I want) to make this place better," the ex-England international told club media."I must admit on Sunday in the stadium it felt a little bit different. There was a real togetherness and kind of enjoyment from everyone and that was powerful for me. Supporting Manchester United and looking forward to what can happen should always be like that. That's the drive (to win trophies) and for us to reward the fans would be pretty special."Carrick's deal takes him through to 2028, when United co-owners Ineos want to celebrate the club's 150th anniversary with the league title. The midfielder has the chance to become the first man to win the Premier League as both player and manager. I'd take that right now," Carrick said. "That's the goal and I've got to believe it. That's what we've got to aim for. It's where we want to be as a club."Director of football Jason Wilcox said the new permanent boss had impressed since taking the helm at Old Trafford. "Michael's achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated," he said."He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington (training ground) and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build."  Related Story
