America’s Kristen Vanderveen continued her fine run in Doha, claiming the CSI3* 1.50m Faults & Time title on the penultimate day of the Al Shaqab Cup Saturday.Riding Bull Run’s Mary, she completed the course in 63.31 seconds for an emphatic victory. South Africa’s Matthew Morrison on Quebec finished second in 68.17 seconds at Al Shaqab’s Longines Outdoor Arena, while Syria’s Mohamad Mogheeth Alshehab partnered with Jaguar MS to take third in 68.79 seconds. This is the third international victory for Vanderveen and her horse, who have only been riding together since last January.Qatar’s Bassem Mohammed also starred, winning the CSI5* Special Two Phase 1.45m aboard Wathnan Chaccball with a clear round in 34.44 seconds. Fellow Qatari Faleh Suwead al-Ajami on Wathnan Quality Street claimed second in 35.67 seconds, while Alshehab and Saphir Z took third in 36.78 seconds.Qatar’s Sheikh Fahad Jassim al-Thani captured the CSI1* Special Two Phase 1.15m title riding Ciara LU, finishing clear in 30.95 seconds. Mohammed Nasser al-Qadi on Calle Cool 47 took second in 35.04 seconds, while Abdulrahman Hamad Juma partnered with Dorus HH to finish third in 35.58 seconds.Qatar’s Mohammed Jassim al-Thani claimed the CSIY-B Special Two Phase 1.25m title riding Granie Mouche, finishing clear in 38.13 seconds. Bahrain’s Sultan Abdulaziz Mayoof Alromaihi on Johelys de Fondcombe took second in 40.91 seconds, while Kuwait’s Madhy Alkhamis partnered with Cash Maker Vd Laarseheide to finish third in 41.27 seconds.At the CSI3* Special Two Phase 1.35m, Qatar’s Saad Ahmed al-Saad rode Craquante de Mazin to victory in 28.40 seconds. Fellow Qatari Saeed Hamad Juma on Wathnan Diesel claimed second in 28.48 seconds, with Saudi Arabia’s Khalid al-Hadi on Capoen finishing third in 28.55 seconds.In the CSI3* Faults & Time 1.45m class, Jordan’s Nasouh Kayali secured first place aboard High Score, completing the course in 71.24 seconds. Germany’s Frederike Staack on Chelsius PS finished second in 76.20 seconds, while Kuwait’s Fawaz Rashed partnered with Gaia des Forets to take third in 77.07 seconds.At the CSI1* Faults & Time 1.30m, Qatar’s Ibrahim Khalid al-Kuwari claimed the title riding Flexy Bel Z with a clear round in 59.99 seconds. Sheikh Fahad Jassim al-Thani on Be Wineham took second in 60.37 seconds, while Canada’s Rami Younis partnered with Mauran S to finish third in 67.78 seconds.  Related Story

(AFP) Pope Leo XIV Saturday denounced the widening gap between the haves and have-nots as he visited Monaco, a millionaires' playground that is the surprise pick for the first western European trip of his papacy.Arriving by helicopter from Rome as the first Pope to visit the principality in nearly half a millenium, Leo was greeted by Monaco's ruler Prince Albert II and his wife, Princess Charlene, at Monte Carlo's heliport under radiant sunshine.Just after his arrival at the tiny principality on the French Riviera, the Pope condemned what he termed the widening "chasms between the poor and the rich", ahead of an afternoon mass before an expected 15,000 people in the Louis II stadium.In an address in French from the balcony of the Prince's Palace, the first US-born pontiff launched into an address which touched on the themes of social justice and inequality dear to his predecessor, Pope Francis.He denounced "unjust configurations of power, structures of sin that dig chasms between poor and rich, between the privileged and the rejected, between friends and enemy".And within walking distance of Monaco's casinos, Leo insisted that wealth should serve "law and justice, especially at a historical moment when displays of force and the logic of omnipotence wound the world and jeopardise peace", in a clear reference to the growing number of conflicts across the globe.Bells pealed across the principality to mark Leo's arrival in the microstate nestled on the Mediterranean between France and Italy.Some 5,000 locals gathered outside the palace to hear the Pope speak, many brandishing flags in the red and white of the principality and the yellow and white of the Vatican.After his speech, more than 1,500 young people welcomed Leo to the square in front of the Church of Saint Devota, dedicated to the patron saint of Monaco.But while cheers went up along the Popemobile's route, the full-scale jubilee hoped for by the authorities did not come to pass.In the tiny city state's streets billboards showing the pontiff in his church regalia offered a stark contrast to gleaming sports cars and jostling crowds of tourists."The Pope brings people together," said Eric Battaglia, a 64-year-old Monegasque artist and musician. "In a world that has been at war for the past few years, it's a blessing that there are people like him, trying to ensure that people remain human."Pope Leo was slated to make speeches addressing environmental protection — which is a cause close to Prince Albert's heart — Monaco's role in Europe and "the protection of life in all its forms", according to the Vatican's press office director, Matteo Bruni.That phrase encompasses opposition to abortion, banned in the principality, and euthanasia, but also serves as condemnation of all conflict, at a time of war in the Middle East which is destabilising the global economy.  Related Story

Tiger Woods was arrested and charged with driving under the influence Friday after a rollover crash near his Florida home, authorities said, as the 15-time major champion’s golf career veered into fresh turmoil. Woods, 50, escaped injury but was detained after his vehicle clipped a truck while attempting to overtake on a residential road on Jupiter Island, flipping onto its side before sliding to a stop. Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods - who was arrested for driving under the influence in 2017 - showed signs of “impairment”, although he passed a breathalyzer test. “When it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused, and so he’s been charged with DUI, with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test in the crash,” Budensiek said. In line with Florida DUI laws, Woods was detained at the county jail for eight hours and was photographed departing the facility in a car late Friday. A booking photo showed a red-eyed, stubbly-chinned Woods when he arrived at the jail about two hours after the crash. Budensiek said drug recognition experts who examined Woods at the scene found the golfer “lethargic” and believed he was impaired with “some kind of medication or drug.” No drugs or medication were found in his vehicle and since Woods refused the urine test, his right under Florida law, authorities “will never get definitive results as to what he was impaired on at the time of the crash,” Budensiek said. While neither Woods nor the driver of the other vehicle was injured, Budensiek said the incident on the two-lane road “could have been a lot worse.” “Had somebody been moving in the opposite direction, we would not be having a conversation saying there was no injuries,” he said. Budensiek said he didn’t know how fast Woods was driving in the moments before the crash. He said the driver of the truck had slowed to make a turn, then tried to move to the side of the road when he saw Woods’s fast-moving vehicle attempting to overtake him. “When I show you the photos, they kind of speak for themselves...you can see that (Woods) slid for a decent space before he came to a stop,” said the sheriff, who said that after the crash Woods climbed out of the passenger-side window of his Land Rover. President Donald Trump expressed sympathy for Woods in remarks to reporters in Miami following the incident. “He’s got some difficulty, there was an accident, and that’s all I know,” Trump said. “Very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person, amazing man, but, uh, some difficulty.” Woods was arrested in Jupiter in 2017 after police found him asleep at the wheel of his damaged car. Woods eventually pleaded guilty to reckless driving and said he had taken a mix of painkillers. Five years ago Woods was involved in a serious car crash in California that left him with severe right leg injuries that required pins inserted in his foot and ankle and a rod in his tibia as well as a follow-up surgery in 2023. Woods returned from that crash at the 2022 Masters, where he struggled to walk all four rounds on the way to a 47th-place finish. Woods, whose clean-cut image was left in tatters after a 2009 sex scandal that upended his career, has been working to return from an Achilles tendon rupture last March and back surgery last October. He competed earlier this week in the TGL simulator indoor golf league finals and had not ruled out playing in next month’s Masters, where his five victories include his first major title in 1997 and his most recent in 2019. “This body ... it doesn’t recover like it did when it was 24, 25. It doesn’t mean I’m not trying,” said Woods, who last competed in a PGA Tour level event at the 2024 British Open. “I keep trying.”

Unusual bursts of trading on the oil and stock markets last week, just minutes before social media posts on the Iran war by President Donald Trump, have added to suspicions of insider trading. Democratic lawmakers, traders and industry watchdogs are raising alarms, saying such seemingly prescient bets are forming a pattern that suggests people are profiting from prior knowledge of White House decision-making. “This is the kind of thing that makes people wonder if their government is acting in their best interest or trying to enrich certain individuals,” said Jordan Libowitz, vice president of the ethics watchdog Crew. In the latest case, trading in oil and S&P 500 futures contracts, in which an investor promises to buy or sell an asset at a fixed price at a later date, saw an unusual spike in trading early Monday. Just 15 minutes later, Trump posted on his Truth Social network that talks with Iran were “very productive” — a dramatic shift in tone after Trump warned Saturday that he had given Tehran 48 hours to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face strikes on its energy grid. The news sent oil prices plunging and stocks surging. People who placed the flurry of futures trades beforehand likely pocketed tens of millions of dollars, according to calculations by a market operator for AFP. “Seeing large transactions like these before an announcement is a little suspicious,” said Michael Lynch, an oil analyst at Strategic Energy & Economic Research. “It’s unusual. You don’t see this at this level in the oil market.” Monday’s incident came a few weeks after six accounts on the betting site Polymarket made $1.2mn on bets that the United States would attack Iran on February 28, the day the war began. According to an analysis by the analytics firm Bubblemaps, the bets were placed just hours before the bombings were reported. And in early January, an individual pocketed more than $400,000 after betting on Polymarket that Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro would be ousted just hours before he was seized in a raid by US forces. So far, there is no evidence to suggest that Trump or White House officials are linked in any way to these transactions. “Any insinuation, without evidence, that a member of the government engaged in these acts is baseless and irresponsible,” a White House spokesperson told several media outlets. Still, critics of the administration see the trades as evidence of corruption. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy posted on X: “Who was it? Trump? A member of his family? Someone in the White House? This is unbelievable corruption.” The transactions have provided further ammunition for Democratic lawmakers and other critics who have accused Trump of conflicts of interest since the beginning of his second term last year. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the world’s largest market for trading derivative financial products, and the US Securities and Exchange Commission both declined to comment.The Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which regulates derivatives markets, did not respond to several requests for comment. On Thursday, a group of congressional Democrats introduced a bill that that would ban bets on elections, government actions, war and sports, CNBC reported. Even some members of Trump’s own party are seeking clarity on the trades. “Someone needs to be publicly shamed for insider trading,” said Republican Jeremy Munson, a candidate for the Minnesota Senate. Mark Neuman, chief investment officer at Hero Asset Management, said it should be possible to discover the identities of those who placed the trades in question, and suggested the problem resulted more from lax oversight. “When you make a transaction, there are details you have to provide” to the exchanges, “so there’s no secret,” Neuman said. “If there were stricter regulators in this country, we would find out” their identities. “But it seems this administration favours less regulation,” he said. “It’s really sad, because the integrity of the markets is being torn to shreds.”
