A 30-year-old woman has been arrested in Maharashtra’s Thane district for allegedly killing her husband following a domestic argument over sarees, police said.
The accused, identified as Sunitadevi Hareram Singh, was taken into custody on Tuesday after investigators alleged that she attacked her husband with a pressure cooker lid before strangling him. Police said she initially tried to present the death as an accident.
According to officials, the incident took place on July 19 at the couple’s residence in Badlapur East. A dispute reportedly broke out between Sunitadevi and her husband, Hareram Kishunji Singh, 35, after he allegedly failed to bring sarees for her.
Police said the argument escalated, following which the woman allegedly assaulted him with the lid of a pressure cooker and later strangled him. The victim was found dead at their home.
Based on the information provided by Sunitadevi, police initially registered an accidental death report. However, a medical examination later raised doubts about the circumstances surrounding the death.
A post-mortem report from a government hospital concluded that the death was not accidental and was caused by violent asphyxia due to strangulation, prompting police to begin a detailed investigation.
“After receiving the medical findings, we questioned the deceased’s relatives and the couple’s landlord. Their statements raised serious suspicion against the wife,” said Senior Inspector Nitin Patil of Badlapur East police station.
Investigators subsequently detained Sunitadevi and booked her in connection with the alleged murder. Police are continuing their probe to establish the sequence of events leading to the man’s death and gather further evidence.
The accused, who originally belonged to Bihar’s Rohtas district, was produced before a local court on Tuesday. The court remanded her to police custody until July 29.
Authorities said further investigation is underway and additional details will emerge as the probe progresses.
