Hats off to the rescue crews in Afghanistan who are working hard to recover survivors and bodies from the rubble of houses destroyed by devastating flash floods that authorities said have killed at least 23 people and left more than 100 missing (“Rescuers in Afghanistan search for scores missing after floods kill 22,” July 24, Gulf Today website).
According to the report, Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events, with snow and heavy rain that trigger flash floods, often killing dozens, or even hundreds, of people at a time. In 2024, more than 300 people died in springtime flash floods.
Heavy rain, flooding, and forest fires are killing innocent people on a daily basis in different parts of the world, becoming the new normal and regularly making headlines in the print and social media. The world’s weather has been severely affected by climate change, resulting in huge human and financial losses with each passing day.
The world has to be serious about the worsening climate change situation and do the needful to avoid further losses caused by climate change.
