US authorities have reported at least 19 suspected heat-related deaths in New Jersey following a days-long heatwave that swept across the state.
New Jersey officials said the suspected fatalities have been recorded since Thursday, with most occurring in the state’s central and northern regions.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Raynard Washington said many of the victims were found in homes without air conditioning, while others were discovered outdoors or inside parked vehicles.
Governor Mikie Sherrill described the heatwave as the most severe to hit New Jersey in more than 14 years, warning that its dangers extend beyond older adults and people with underlying health conditions to residents of all ages.
The heatwave coincided with severe storms that swept across parts of the United States, leaving nearly one million homes and businesses without power.
