France urges Israel to respect US-Iran agreement and halt hostilities in Lebanon

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot called on Israel to comply with the protocol of the agreement signed between the United States and Iran, which provides for an end to the conflict in the Middle East, including Lebanon.

Barrot said the agreement requires a cessation of hostilities and stressed that the Israeli government should abide by it, adding that the United States should exert the necessary pressure to ensure compliance.

He also downplayed the postponement of talks that had been scheduled to begin in Switzerland between the United States and Iran to implement the agreement reached on Wednesday, saying the delay should not be overinterpreted as long as the agreement had already been signed in Versailles.

Barrot emphasized that the priority now is for discussions, including technical-level talks, to continue in order to activate the initial stages of the agreement.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon early today killed 18 people and injured 33 others, according to preliminary figures released by the Lebanese Ministry of Health, despite the ceasefire that entered into force under the US-Iran memorandum of understanding.
