OpenAI announced the official launch of the ChatGPT add-in for Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets spreadsheet models, making it available to all users globally after the end of the beta version.
The company began testing the add-in in Excel last March, before making it available in Google Sheets during April, and the final version of the add-in allows the ChatGPT bot to be used directly within spreadsheets without having to leave the application.
The ChatGPT add-in allows the creation of complete spreadsheets and data sets based on simple text commands. Users can create budget tracking, performance dashboards, and other forms simply by describing what is required, and ChatGPT automatically prepares the tables, formulas, and overall structure.
The add-in also allows users to modify existing tables by sorting unsorted data, updating formulas, running new scenarios, and reformatting results by describing what they need in plain language instead of manually dealing with complex tools and formulas. Furthermore, the add-in enables users to ask direct questions about the spreadsheet content when they encounter unclear formulas or seemingly illogical results, pointing out that users can request an immediate explanation from ChatGPT about problems or errors.
Professional users are expected to benefit most from these capabilities, especially those working with complex financial models and multi-page spreadsheets, but the feature is also aimed at ordinary users, as it makes creating personal budgets and tracking expenses much easier than starting from a blank page.
The main advantage of adding ChatGPT is that it simplifies equation creation in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, one of the most prominent strengths of spreadsheet programs.
