His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has intervened to suspend the decision by the Department of Economic Development in Sharjah to shut down the tourist boat project operated by citizen Abu Hamad from Kalba. The closure was initially ordered over concerns that the boat’s propellers could endanger the rare turtles inhabiting the lake.
Demonstrating a commitment to both public welfare and environmental protection, His Highness pledged to replace the boats with propeller-free models specifically designed to coexist harmoniously with wildlife in such sensitive ecosystems.
During a phone conversation on the “Direct Line” programme, aired on Sharjah Broadcast Authority, His Highness also shared encouraging news with Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority. He confirmed that the much-anticipated “Above the Clouds” rest area is on track to open by the end of this year or early next year, God willing.
In response to Abu Hamad, a citizen who called into the programme to discuss his private tourist boat project in Kalba, which was halted by the DED due to concerns about its impact on turtles in the area, His Highness addressed the matter compassionately. Abu Hamad expressed his commitment to continuing his project despite the challenges.
Sheikh Sultan assured him, promising assistance and expressing sympathy for his predicament. Efforts would be made to provide boats designed with specifications suitable for the sensitive environment, utilizing jet propulsion systems instead of traditional propellers to avoid harming wildlife. His Highness explained that if such boats were available for purchase, they would be gifted to Abu Hamad, and if not, custom ones would be prepared. These boats would allow visitors to experience the area’s natural beauty without disturbing the creatures that inhabit it.
Sheikh Sultan stressed the importance of preserving nature while supporting tourism initiatives. He highlighted the uniqueness of Kalba, where visitors can enjoy tranquil boat rides among mangroves and trees. He encouraged respect for the habitat by limiting noise, explaining that the animals rely on their environment’s natural soundscape for survival and communication. The young birds must respond to their mothers’ calls, and this delicate ecosystem deserves protection.
Sheikh Sultan further stressed the significance of safeguarding these areas, which are home to vibrant wildlife. He noted how turtles frequent the lake as if seeking a haven, some suffering from injuries caused by boat propellers. Protecting such creatures is vital, as humans are guests in their natural kingdom.
Pointing out ongoing beautification efforts, he mentioned how a contractor was clearing rocks on one side of the lake to prepare it for landscaping. This would enhance the Corniche’s aesthetics, offering visitors a serene view of greenery rather than barren rocks, thereby harmonizing development with environmental preservation.
Sheikh Sultan also pointed to the Kalba Waterfront project near the flagpole. He mentioned a channel at the end of the area that links one side to the other, featuring a meandering passage for water movement. The region, previously a lifeless salt flat with an unpleasant odor, is now undergoing a thorough cleaning. A key highlight of this lake is that it offers people the chance to enjoy boat rides from either the flagpole or from the fishermen’s rest area at the creek entrance.
He affirmed their commitment to preserving and protecting Sharjah’s natural areas. Despite requests to construct a large hotel on Kalba Beach, he declined the proposal because it’s a habitat for turtles, particularly near the Kingfisher project. This location is exclusive for certain turtle species that lay their eggs there. Even when offered to build the hotel on a smaller footprint, he refused, as noise would drive the turtles away. His approach to nature and wildlife prioritizes development and enhancement without causing harm.
Sheikh Sultan concluded his remarks with uplifting news regarding the much-anticipated opening of the “Above the Clouds” rest area. He announced that the site is expected to open either by the end of this year or early next year. The project is nearing completion, with only a few final touches remaining. Efforts are underway to finalize the landscaping, including the planting of greenery and trees. Work on finishing details, such as sidewalks, is also progressing.
His Highness expressed his hope that the opening will mark a joyful occasion, providing a serene space for people to enjoy its tranquil atmosphere and pleasant weather. He emphasised his dedication to every corner of Sharjah, ensuring it brings benefit and delight to its residents and visitors alike.
