The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) emphasised the UAE’s vital role in advancing lunar exploration, aligning its goals with the Artemis II mission.
While Artemis II marked a milestone in manned spaceflight achievements, the Emirates Lunar Exploration Project is set to take another significant step with the Rashid 2 rover, which will explore the far side of the moon. This announcement was highlighted in a 1-minute, 44-second video released by MBRSC on the X platform, coinciding with the successful return of the Artemis II crew to Earth following their orbit around the moon.
In the video, Dr Sultan Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, described Artemis II as a landmark mission, marking humanity’s return to the moon after five decades and paving the way for future manned missions.
He reaffirmed that the UAE is an active participant in this global effort, contributing through initiatives like the UAE Astronaut Programme and the Emirates Lunar Exploration Project. Additionally, he noted that the UAE is a signatory of the Artemis Accords, which aim to foster international collaboration in exploring the moon, Mars, asteroids, and comets.
Astronaut Hazzaa Al Mansouri highlighted that Artemis II, a 10-day lunar mission involving Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, is designed to test various operations and the Orion spacecraft, serving as a critical step toward future lunar expeditions.
Dr Hamad Al Marzouqi, Project Manager of the Emirates Lunar Exploration Project, reiterated the UAE’s ambitious vision for lunar exploration.
He revealed that the Rashid 2 rover is fully prepared for its launch and landing on the Moon’s far side.
He stressed the importance of combining manned and unmanned missions to enhance exploratory capabilities. He also noted that any scientific mission under the Artemis II framework contributes significantly to expanding knowledge of the lunar surface and supports preparations for further exploration efforts.
Reem Al Muhaisni, Head of Assembly, Testing, and Integration, emphasised the alignment between the Emirates Lunar Exploration Project and Artemis missions. Both initiatives focus on testing cutting-edge technologies, gathering valuable scientific data, and establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon while paving the path for eventual human missions to Mars.
The centre is set to launch the Rashid 2 rover in 2026 in partnership with Firefly Aerospace. This mission, targeting the far side of the Moon, represents a critical milestone in the Emirates Lunar Exploration Project’s ongoing efforts.
